‘Hammered Wenger, wanted Emery out and now Arteta – can you please Arsenal fans?’

Arsenal are in very real danger of being left behind in the Premier League as they face a fight to even finish in the top-half this season.

But manager Mikel Arteta is not to blame, his players just aren’t good enough.

Arteta’s side had no joy as they were beaten by Man City last weekend

That’s the verdict from Charlie Austin who has hit back at demanding Arsenal fans who appear to be turning on their boss.

Gooners were left to reflect on the reality of their place in the English top-flight this weekend after losing at home to Premier League leaders Manchester City, a result which left the Gunners tenth in the table.

It is approaching 17 years since Arsenal were last crowned Premier League champions, and it was 15 years ago this week that the Gunners beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in one of the club’s great European victories.

But a lot has happened since those days under Arsene Wenger, with Arsenal’s current team in real danger of finishing in the bottom-half of the Premier League.

And supporters are not happy. Monday’s Drivetime show was inundated with calls, texts and emails from unhappy Gooners following Sunday’s result, and many of them say fans turn their anger towards manager Arteta.

“It’s not the worst Arsenal team, the manager isn’t good enough for the job,” one text read. “He will be some day, but not now. If we had Ancelotti we’d be doing a lot better.”

But that triggered Austin, who insisted the manager isn’t to blame for the team’s current slump, his players just aren’t good enough.

“That’s a cop-out tweet,” said the QPR striker.

“‘If we had Ancelotti’? When they appointed Arteta they were buzzing about a new beginning after the ‘boring’ football under Emery, and now it hasn’t worked out they want to bring someone else in!

“Trust your manager, give him time!

“Can you please Arsenal fans? Wenger was there for so long but all of a sudden they hammered him like he was a failure, so he leaves. Another manager comes in, Emery, they didn’t enjoy him and Arteta comes in and now he’s to blame.

Jason Cundy, Perry Groves and Simon the Arsenal fan’s heated discussion on whether Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team are better than Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’

“Look at your squad. Is your squad good enough to finish in the top four? Simple answer, no.

“Is your squad good enough in the top six right now in the Premier League? No! Well there you go then, your team just isn’t good enough.

“We’re not talking about titles, we’re not even talking about top four or even top six. Is this Arsenal team good enough to finish in the top half of the Premier League? That’s the question for Arsenal now.”

The texts kept coming in from disgruntled Gunners, and another frank message led Austin to claim the north London side are being left behind in the Premier League.

Laurence the Arsenal fan sent this message to the show: “We’ve been declining since the Champions League final in 2006 – we went from Thierry Henry to Marouane Chamakh, Sol Campbell to Philippe Senderos, Patrick Vieira to Mohamed Elneny. Don’t think I have to say much more.”

“I don’t think he does, I think it’s all there for everybody to see,” replied Austin. “They haven’t been hitting the heights they have done for years.

“I think if Arsenal fans were honest, they would be happy just to win the FA Cup.

“When Wenger was in charge it was almost a given that Arsenal could go on a cup run, get to the final and maybe win, and Arsenal fans would be happy with that… but surely you want more!

“Considering the players he just named and the fact they were in the Champions League final – you’ve got no chance of getting to the Champions League final for a long, long time, and it doesn’t look like you’re going to win the Premier League for a long, long time.

“Where is your club going? You’re not in a transition stage, you’re in a deep dark place and I’m not sure they’re going to get out of it for a while.

“It might not be the worst team Arsenal have ever had, but the Premier League is getting better and better and they’re going in the wrong direction.”
